If use Pre-Auth for taking payments with cards, you might want to Authorize more than the initial amount of the Order. This can help account for Order changes and a potential gratuity that's added later.

Extra Cover Amount

An Extra Cover allows you to hold an added percentage on an Authorized credit card so that you can add a tip or account for extra Order Items and Charges added later on.

  1. To add an Extra Cover amount, go to Setup > Online Ordering > Payments.

  2. Click the Payment Gateway you use to take payments.

  3. In Extra Cover, select a percentage amount that will be added to the total Order when a Pre-Authorization Hold is placed on a card. This will hold that total Order amount plus the Extra Cover to account for any extra charges.

  4. Once the Final Payment is taken, only the actual amount of the Order will be charged on the card. So if the initial Pre-Auth was for more money than got charged, the Customer will only be charged for what they ordered.

How Extra Charge Reflects in the Payments Tab

If you have an Extra Cover Amount, the selected percentage will be added to the Authorization Hold. In this case, we have it set to 20%. So we see that what was Authorized is 20% more than the Order Total.

Once you take Final Payment, if no extra items, charges, or tip was added, the Amount Paid will match what the original Order Total was. Any extra funds held from the Extra Cover will be released.
